PREACHING : Being Empowered

“…that he would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, that ye may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;
17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,18 may be strong to apprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, of the love of Christ.”

Meaning: give (someone) the authority or power to do something. To equip or supply with an ability; enable

PROPOSITION: What does God’s word say about empowerment? What is the truth about being empowered? First is that…

From the beginning of time, when God created man, He gave him the authority to rule, to govern, to manage and be stewards of all His creation. He literally encouraged man to use that authority to do what He plans for him to live the best of life according to His will. He blessed man and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue (discipline) it, and have dominion (power and authority) over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good…” Genesis 1: 28-31
Until today that authority given to man still holds true to all who believe and serve God. He empowered and strengthened us to obey His commands. This empowerment/authority must be in lined with God’s will so our lives will enjoy the fruit of God’s favor and blessings. He taught us to regulate, and administer authority so it will properly function and benefit others. From the verse I just read, it is also important for us to remember, with the power and authority God gave us; He also gave us a great responsibility to fulfill. As uncle Ben told Peter Parker of the Spider Man movie, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” A Responsibility to manage well (with emphasis), the resources entrusted to us with discipline, self control and righteous intentions. Bright Rock School, the Officials, the teachers, faculty and staff, the students and the parents, we all have a great responsibility as God’s stewards to use and handle God’s resources and blessings, God’s way.

2.    MAN IS EMPOWERED TO INSPIRE… Vs.18 “…may be strong and apprehend with all the saints…”
God has not only empower us to manage well His resources but also to INSPIRE (motivate, arouse, instigate, and stir) others to follow the right path of obeying God’s commands. Let us grab every moment given to us to inspire other people to understand the will of God, to follow and obey His word, to understand how wide, how long and high and how deep God’s love for every one of us. God’s love for us should inspire us to love God and inspire others. God showed and demonstrated His love so we could also demonstrate this love to others. Inspire others to be grateful to God no matter how small it may be. For some of God’s greatest miracles are found in small things. Inspire others to trust and love God above all else for He alone is the Source of all our need. Inspire others to fear God and keep His commands for this is the whole duty of man. Let me share some of these famous quotes of today about being an inspiration…

Let our actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.” (John Quincy Adams) Let us not be like “a mediocre teacher who tells. A good teacher who explains. A superior teacher who demonstrates. But we should be like The great teacher who inspires.” – (William Arthur Ward) People will forget what we said, people will forget what we did to them, but people will never forget how we made them feel.” (Maya Angelou) With what is happening to our nation today, with the thousands of our fellow kababayans suffering from hunger, thirst, nakedness and loss of love ones and property, a small good deed to inspire them will go a long, long way to inspire others to follow our example. Small as we are here in this place, but I will never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can make a change in our world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” – (Margaret Mead) We just don’t know how many lives will be saved if we inspire others today. LET US GRAB THIS MOMENT AND INSPIRE OTHERS…

Jesus was and still is our greatest example when it comes to serving. Mark 10:45 states “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” We are what we are today because Jesus was not ashamed in serving His love for us by giving His life for us. Serving is such an important part of what life is about. Upon seeing a dying man lying on the street after being robbed, The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?” Let us then be that Good Samaritan. There are many people outside this place that needs our service. That needs our attention that needs our concern and our action. Let us be God’s instrument so that His love be real to those who need it. Let us not love in words only but also in deed.

As U.S. President George Bush said, “From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others.” For the “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson PAY IT FORWARD
