The history of this particular holiday is quite well known and is taught for several consecutive years in elementary and middle school, so it is imperative to not make a fool of yourself by not knowing why this holiday came to be. Way back on December 4th, 1619 the Virginia colony held what is considered the first thanksgiving celebration for the harvest they received that year. However, this was not considered a true thanksgiving, as harvest festivals were fairly common back in Europe. The first true thanksgiving festival was in 1623 to celebrate a rain shower that had occurred after a long draught. Sometime during the mid-17th century this evolved into an annual tradition.
